Iga enters discount fuel business with its $2.50 gallon diesel engine in Detroit as first diesel engine to sell at no discount in 12 years

A 24-hour discount on Detroit Water Taxi's diesel engine that came online last week will be available by Oct. 30 for residents and visitors to Detroit.

And while it's not guaranteed to work, it's a good sign that one of the biggest challenges to a diesel engine's long-term viability — its ability to power its own engines — is starting to come to a head.

"This was never our dream," said Mike Loomis, CEO of Michigan Public Service Co., in a phone interview Wednesday, when asked if the company had taken a shot at a commercial customer. "Our customers need it. We want it."

The discount is a result of the partnership between the city and Detroit Water Taxi.

The program is a "natural extension" of a three-year program Detroit and Water Taxi implemented last October, said Loomis, who started his company in 1997.

It allows residents and visitors to purchase up to $2.50 gallon discount fuel using the water taxi service's diesel engine, but it doesn't work on the city-owned fleet that would otherwise run at a full-power diesel-powered diesel engine. That's when the diesel engine comes into play — the difference between a diesel truck and a diesel water taxi in a garage or park.

So far the company's offer has worked well for both customers, which is why it's being rolled out to residents and visitors, Loomis said. He is confident more customers will be able to get the discount fuel through the program.

"It worked great for us," he said. "Now we're just looking to roll it out to some more people."

He said his biggest reason for opening the service was to extend the service to the "un-utilized" diesel vehicles that remain as part of the city's fleet.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, N.Y. (NEWS10) - A man is facing charges after allegedly attacking a family during a home invasion, and two suspects were taken into custody.

As News10 previously reported, a 58-year-old woman was living in a one-bedroom flat with her two children at 5100 Bemis St. on Sunday afternoon, and her mother, 61, came home on the balcony.

As News10 previously reported, witnesses saw the homeowner enter the apartment through the back door and then move towards the front door. Police say that's when the woman started screaming and her children ran out of the home.

Then, the men, who have not been identified, came back into the home and began kicking, and striking, the woman and her two daughters repeatedly.

They later took off in a red Honda Civic that was in the wrong driveway. Police think the three men were trying to get back to their car when they came upon the woman lying on the ground.

The mother was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital with serious facial injuries. Two children were taken to a local hospital where they're in critical condition, suffering from trauma to both lungs.

Police believe the suspects might face charges of first-degree criminal possession of a firearm as well as grand larceny.

The mother suffered severe facial injuries while trying to drive away.

No one else is injured.
